Did you ever wake up startled, thinking that you fell? If so, do not worry, this happens to almost everyone. Usually, this sensation comes to us while we sleep, or at the beginning of sleep.
Scientifically, this phenomenon is known as hypnagogic jerk, which is nothing more than an involuntary muscle spasm, which occurs when a person is drifting into sleep.
This pull is named after the transitional hypnotic period between wakefulness and sleep.
Muscle spasms may occur spontaneously, or they may be induced by external stimuli, such as sound or light. Some people have suffered these “fall breaks” accompanied by hallucinations, bright lights or loud noises caused by their own conscience.
These sleep starts are quite frequent, about 70% of people experience them.
